The Bernese Oberland is a wild, sensational high mountain region. To get the most from the high peaks in this range a good level of fitness and ski ability. Many of the peaks require the use of ice axe and crampons to reach their summits. It is essential that you arrive possessing the appropriate mountaineering skills. You should note that this tour has a 1:2 guiding ratio, this is for safety reasons on the peaks we will be attempting.

Outline Programme

Day 1
Arrive at the Mountain Hostel in Grindelwald Grund for a meeting with the guide.

Day 2
Equipment checks; then skills training and off piste skiing in and around the local ski area at Kleine Scheidegg. Mid afternoon take the mountain railway through the Eiger to the Jungfraujoch 3454m. From here we have a short skin to the Mönchjoch hut where we will spend the night.

Day 3
From the Mönchjoch hut we can either make an ascent of either Louroihorn 3779m or Trugberg 3880m (these are both good warm up peaks) en route to the Konkordiahütten.

Day 4
We would hope to climb the Gross-Grünhorn 4043m, which is a perfect ski mountaineering peak requiring roped climbing and the use of ice axe and crampons to reach the summit. We then have a 1000m+ of skiing descent to return to Konkordiahütten where we will spend a second night.

Day 5
A traverse of the Gross-Fiescherhorn 4048m this is a big committing ski mountaineering day with incredible rewards. Then descend to the Finsteraarhorn Hutten.

Day 6
We make an ascent of the Finsteraarhorn 4273m. This is another classic of the area requiring climbing skills to reach the summit. Or we climb the Schönbühlhorn 3854m for a slightly easier day. Then continue on to the Oberaarjochhütte 3258m.

Day 7
We will start the day with an ascent of Voder 3517m. Then on the final day we have a monster descent to Munster in the Rhone valley on arrival in the valley the tour will finish . From here it is easy to return to Grindelwald or Geneva by train.

Level 3 - Ski Touring - Your ability should be

On Piste
You enjoy skiing the fall line! You can ski with ease on any on piste terrain.

Off Piste
You take pleasure in the challenge of steeper off piste terrain and can ski the fall line. You have extensive experience of skiing off piste.

Ski Touring
You have completed at least two other high mountain tours. You have a good level of fitness and stamina. You are proficient in the use of skins and have knowledge of how to use an ice axe and crampons. You will rise to the challenge of steep terrain, possibly with your skis strapped to your rucksack and crampons on your feet.
