Summer Courses

Matterhorn

To stand a chance of success on the Matterhorn there are a number of factors that need to be just right as well as your own fitness and competence. Weather and the conditions on the Matterhorn will stop a good number of attempts each summer. In short the Matterhorn is a serious peak requiring the utmost respect and a bit of luck with the weather.
We will work on a 1:1 guiding ratio throughout the 6 days, this is to provide you with the best possible chance of success on the summit. The ratio will give us the flexibility to make the best possible use of the weather. If you do not make an attempt on the Matterhorn summit because of conditions you will have had the chance to climb other fantastic classic routes in this area or the Chamonix range. The route of ascent most people will opt for is by the Hornli Ridge which is one of the finest climbs in the alps (when it is not too busy). On some occasions the South ridge on the Eiger can be a good alternative when the Matterhorn is out of condition.
During this week you will work closely with your guide and in consultation with them you will decide the best program of climbs for the week. The program will depend on your previous experience, the weather forcast and local conditions .
If you would like to climb the Matterhorn with a friend it is possible to climb for the first 3-4 days on a 1:2 ratio then the ratio changes to 1:1 for the Matterhorn climb. A local Zermatt guide is normally used if this combination is taken.
